Open Sourcing iPhone Apps ... WordPress is doing it!
Just thought I'd mention that WordPress has released the source code for their iPhone application. There is also some hoopla over a course that will be taught at Stanford on iPhone programming. Especially the latter makes it appear likely that the NDA will be lifted soon.
WordPress is also a big enough target for Apple to take down if they're really serious about it. So if nothing happens for a week or two, I think we'll see a lot of opening of iPhone source code.
We were just notified that the iPhone NDA will be lifted inside of a week: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/program/. When I get the new agreement, I'll post the source (and a bit more about the iPhone-specific portions of the application).
At first, I'll just do tarballs, but I'm working on getting my local Subversion repository moved across to my server here.
Thanks for your patience.
I'm watching this very closely. I deal with many NDAs and CDAs for my day job, and I treat them very seriously. It's not just for the legal ramifications, but if you violate one company's trust, you'll find that few others want to work with you. I would like official confirmation that this is acceptable now and that they won't take action on posted source code before I make this all public, along with posts on what I've learned while putting this together, but if they don't move on any of the increasingly more detailed public disclosures I may be tempted to proceed.
This NDA is harming their young platform and them as a company. With the 2.1 SDK out there, hopefully they'll see the light and lift the NDA on at least the 2.0 SDK. Otherwise, I don't know what we'll even talk about at the iPhoneDevCamp in Chicago.
