A blue-circled arrow is intended to provide more detail about the item, where tapping on the item selects it and enables a certain action.

You can see an example of how Apple uses this in the WiFi settings on an iOS device, where tapping on a network name switches to that network, but tapping on the blue disclosure arrow for a network name brings up more information about that network.

I agree, it can be a little tricky if you don't see that option often, but it is Apple's solution to presenting this kind of thing in a touch-based table listing like this.
pubDate Thu, 13 Oct 2011 18:24:32 +0000 dc:creator Brad Larson guid false comment 1102 at http://www.sunsetlakesoftware.com wow, that's completely http://www.sunsetlakesoftware.com/forum/cant-download-any-new-molecules-all-searches-turn-web-pages#comment-1101
wow, that's completely non-obvious...but working fine now; thanks!
pubDate Thu, 13 Oct 2011 18:15:34 +0000 dc:creator tenangrykittens guid false comment 1101 at http://www.sunsetlakesoftware.com How are you trying to http://www.sunsetlakesoftware.com/forum/cant-download-any-new-molecules-all-searches-turn-web-pages#comment-1100
How are you trying to download the molecules?

Tapping on the main body of each item in the list will cause it to download. Tapping on the blue detail disclosure arrow to the right of the molecule's name will only bring up a web page that describes that molecule. I bet that you're tapping on the disclosure button instead of the name of the molecule. Try tapping on the name of the molecule instead.
pubDate Thu, 13 Oct 2011 17:51:28 +0000 dc:creator Brad Larson guid false comment 1100 at http://www.sunsetlakesoftware.com
